Hate speech is a threat that occurs in many societies across the world, and it is spreading fast through the Internet. In Nigeria, online hate speech is heating up a polity already divided along religious, ethnic and political lines. Some fear that if action is not taken to remedy the situation, Nigeria may repeat the tragic mistakes that led to the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Peter Eigbedion and Abdul-Hakeem Ajijola, who themselves are Nigerian citizens and CyAN members, have risen to the challenge. Here’s a short video of a panel convened in Lagos, Nigeria on the 28th of February 2017 with the active support of CyAN to discuss online hate speech and ways to curb its spread.
